Amerigo & America
American Contemporary Art in Florence
Palagio di Parte Guelfa, Florence
May 5–11, 2012
In May 2012, the historic Palagio di Parte Guelfa in Florence hosted American Contemporary Art in Florence, a group exhibition bringing together a diverse community of American and international artists living and working in Tuscany. The exhibition formed part of the official Amerigo & America program, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the death of Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci.
Presented in the heart of the city, just steps from Piazza della Repubblica, the exhibition offered a rich cross-section of contemporary artistic practices, including painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, and small-scale installations. The show reflected the layered experience of expatriate artists whose work exists in dialogue with both their origins and their adopted cultural landscape.
Artists in the exhibition were affiliated with several Florence-based organizations, including the American International League, Network, Young Anglo Women’s Network, and the Healing Photo Art Foundation. Together, these groups foster creative exchange, professional development, and cultural connection among international residents in Tuscany.
The exhibition was open to the public daily from 9:00 to 18:30 and welcomed visitors into one of Florence’s most storied civic spaces, creating a meaningful intersection between contemporary artistic expression and the city’s enduring historical legacy.
The opening was attended by representatives of the Amerigo & America committee and members of the international cultural community, underscoring the significance of the exhibition within the broader commemorative program.
American Contemporary Art in Florence stands as a moment of artistic convergence, highlighting the vitality of contemporary work produced within Florence’s international creative community and affirming the city’s ongoing role as a place of inspiration, exchange, and artistic renewal.
