PLYMOUTH — Boston-born and Italian-trained artist and designer Mya Royal will open a traditional atelier, also known as a workshop or studio, on Plymouth waterfront.

The up-and-coming area was chosen for this 2,000-square-foot, open-plan design headquarters because of its water views and is open to walk-in clients Monday through Friday, and by appointment on weekends. A series of grand opening events has already begun. A fashion show is planned for the official ribbon cutting, which will be hosted by the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce in the new atelier from 8:30 to 10 a.m. March 18, 2020.

Royal first started her shop in Boston’s North End, later moving it to Florence, Italy, for several years. Local community members have already placed their first orders for bespoke suits and couture style gowns, all made by hand to order. In order to meet the overall needs of so many interested customers, a high fashion label is preparing to launch from the site as well, with ready-to-wear items for the whole family and home.

Royal completed a masters program in Fashion Design at l’Accademia Italiana in Florence, after her bachelors in art from UMass Boston. She has been making custom apparel for 20 years, since she designed her own curriculum in the field as a student at Silver Lake High School.
